— Biography —

Chase McCay (b. 2003) is an award-winning composer, arranger, music engraver, trumpeter, and conductor from Austin, Texas, USA. His compositions have been performed with ensembles at both the secondary and collegiate level, including concert bands, marching bands, chamber groups, and full symphony orchestras. His music has been hailed as “beautiful, honest, and alive,”—“ambitious yet achievable and thrilling”—and “tuneful and memorable.”

His works for wind band are heavily inspired by early 20th century music, often drawing influence from Holst, Grainger, and Copland, as well as modern composers like Maslanka, Giroux, and Grantham. In his music, Chase aims to “tell stories about our past, explore the beauty of our natural world, and reinvigorate the American dream with new light and positivity.”

Chase began composing in 2017 through the process of self-teaching, taking inspiration from modern composers in film such as John Powell, Ludwig Göransson, Michael Giacchino, and John Williams. In his first two years of high school, he wrote over a half-dozen arrangements and original fanfares for his marching band. In late 2019, he was commissioned to compose an honorary piece for his high school Wind Ensemble, which he rehearsed, conducted, and premiered with the band.

Throughout high school and early college, Chase’s music received accolades and recognition in several composing competitions. His piece, K2, won fifth place in the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s Texas Young Composers Competition, earning him a scholarship and live performance with ASO. His work, Euphoric Dawn, was recognized as the winner of the 2021-2022 University of Texas Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, in which Chase became the first ever college freshman to be programmed on a concert with UTSO. In 2022, he completed his first symphony for wind ensemble, titled Verdant Anthology, written in honor of the 150th anniversary of Yellowstone National Park.

Chase’s music has been read by the Grammy-winning sextet, Eighth Blackbird, as well as the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble, the University of Texas Wind Ensemble, and many others. In early 2024, he participated in an exclusive masterclass where he received direct mentorship from world-renowned composer, John Mackey.

In addition to composition, Chase has served as a professional music engraver for many faculty members at The University of Texas. He was selected out of dozens of candidates to engrave Farkhad Khudyev’s The Sounds of Eternity, which debuted to a sold-out audience at Bates Recital Hall. His engraving services have made many high-profile performances at the Butler School of Music possible, including those by the UT Symphony Orchestra, University Orchestra, and the UT Wind Ensemble. Chase now serves as the primary music engraver to renowned composer, Donald Grantham.

Chase is currently pursuing a B.M. in Composition at The University of Texas at Austin, with a minor in Entrepreneurship. He has received private mentoring with Dr. Donald Grantham, Dr. Alyssa Weinberg, Dr. Russell Podgorsek, and Omar Thomas. Chase is also a three-year member of the Showband of the Southwest (Longhorn Band), where he plays the trumpet.
